Sgt. Fred F. Schetelich, Babe Ruth & Lou Gehrig

Fredrich F. Schetelich was born in 1894 and grew up in Newark.

In 1916 he went to Buffalo NY and got married but returned in 1917 when he registered for the WW1 Draft.  But when he went to Buffalo, he played semi pro baseball.  He was in the NJ National Guard during the war and served in France. The Regiment fought in three major engagements at Lorrance, St MiHiel, and the Meuse – Argonne.  A notable member of the regiment was Sgt Alvin York who was awarded the Medal of Honor.  Fred Schetelick returned to Newark after the war and held several jobs including a clerk and a barber. He ended up clerking for a local bank. During the 1920’s and early 30’s he continued playing semi pro baseball. In those days the semi pro teams were sponsored by various towns and businesses. Fred was a pitcher and a notable batter. In the attached news article show him with Babe Ruth and Lou Gerhig.  Fred Schetelich was buried in Woodland Cemetery on September 16, 1941, in Section 1400, Row 1403 Grave 3.
